Vintage cookbook: The Daily Dessert Calendar (part 1 of 3: cover – page 12)

Here's another collection of recipes from the deep, dark past of the early 20th century. I can't find a copyright date (copyright applied for, but when?), but it was published in Houston, Texas, probably right around 1920

(if the picture inside the front cover – below – is any clue).

Inside front cover: posh ad. Please note the tiny cars at the bottom of the photo)

The bulk of this book is not particularly pretty, but, despite the lack of enticing images, it's still chock full o' temptation. And a few of the things I found entertaining or worthy of comment are highlighted with colored text…

Foreword

The author, Margaret Wayne, Secretary, American Culinary Guild

Index to the Home Service Guide of Tested Products – Progressive Firms (better known to you as advertisers)

p. 2: Jan'y 8-14: National Favorite Rice Pudding; Chocolate Cookies; Grapenut Pudding; Lemon Pie; Almond Tartlets; Delicate White Cake; Cranberry Jell

For the record, I don't think the above-advertised A.B.C. Stores in Texas are the same as ABC Stores in, say, Virginia... unless this is a thoroughly decadent, besotted cooking guild. [hiccups guiltily]

p. 3: Jan'y 15-21: German Apple Cake; Snow Pudding; Apple Minute Tapioca; Fruit Pudding; Stuffed Dates; Saucy Cream Puffs; Plain Charlotte Russe

p. 4: Jan'y 22-28: Ice Cream with Eclairs and Chocolate Sauce; Rhubarb Pie; Orange Parfait; Pineapple Rice Pudding; Stuffed Dates with Whipped Cream; Apple Sauce Cake; Poor Man's Rice Pudding

p. 5: Jan'y 29-Feb'y 4: Pineapple Pie; Date Brownies; Steamer Graham Pudding; Caldonian Cream; Baked Indian Suet Pudding; Angel Ginger Bread; Feather Eggless Cake

p. 7: Feb'y 12-18: English Walnut Trilbys; Marshmallow Apples; Fruit Dumplings; Quick Sauce Cake; Prune Moonshine; Apple Charlotte; Delicious Apple Cake

A Trilby is a sandwich cookie, like an Oreo or a Nutter Butter
As opposed to anybody else's apple cake. B*tch…   ;)

p. 8: Feb'y 19-25: Cocoanut Fruit Cup; Orange Pudding; Nut Torte; Banana Pie; Ambrosia De Luxe; Preserved Apricot Pie; Date Pudding

p. 9: Feb'y 26-March 3: Grape Sherbet; Chinese Delight; Chocolate Fluff Cake; Mistletoe Cake; Banana Sponge; Grape Juice Apple; Cherry Pudding

p. 10: March 4-10: Fruit Whipped Cream; Apple Dumpling; Date Pudding; Walnut Chocolate Sundae; Food For the God's; Bavarian Cream; Fruit Fluff

Which god's possessions, I know not.

p. 11: March 11-17: Carries Sherbet;* Marshmallow Charlotte; Grandma's Canned Cherry Pie; Old Southern Pudding; Prune Whip; Banana Pudding; Brown Nut Cakes

*Beats me what carries it, though.

p.12: March 18-24: Vanilla Wafer Pudding; Maple Walnut Cream Pudding; Cocoanut Parfait; Peach Delight; Candle Light; Surprise Cake; Lemon Pudding

You may have seen a variation of this, as "Candle Salad", using mayonnaise instead of whipped cream, and served on a bed of iceberg lettuce.

Vintage cookbook: The Daily Dessert Calendar (part 2 of 3: pp. 13 – 32)

Continuing the scanned pages from this entertaining collection of recipes and advertisements from roughly 1920, Houston TX.

Here comes the middle section of the book. I'm pleased to say my birthday falls in this part, and even more pleased to note it does not involve any nuts. There are enough of those in my family already.

I hope your day's dessert is to your liking.

Note: anything that catches my eye for comment will be picked out in a separate color, and the comment will match that color. Because why not?

p. 13: March 25-31: Nut and Raisin Ice Cream; Grape Juice Souffle; Almond and Rhubarb Jelly; Ginger Ice Cream; Marshmallow Pudding; Chocolate Surprise; Mint Sherbet

P. 14: April 1-7: Butterscotch Delicatesse; Cocoanut Custard; Fig Souffle; Butterscotch Pie; Crumb Custard; Easter Eggs; Minute Delicacies

Their wee size – not time – is of the "minute"

p. 15: April 8-14: Piquant Cups; Pixie Roll; Red and Yellow Dessert; Peach Florals;
Apple Betty; Biscuit Tortoni; Cream Sponge Cake

Fruit-laden gelatin smothered in a creamy custard sauce. How to go over the top on a tight budget.

p. 16: April 17-21: Dream Pies a la Mode; Nut Cake; Apricots en Mousse; Fudge Cake; Ice Box Cake; Nut Frappe; Dream Cream

p. 17: April 22-28: Macaroon Pudding; Apple Crisp; Pineapple Marshmallow Dainty; St. James Pudding; Peach Coulever Derose; Apricot Charm; Pecan Crumb Cake

'Tis but a trifle….  ;)

p. 18: April 29-May 5: Left Over Pie; Pecan Delight; Cranberry Pie; Cherry Apple Custard; Pineapple Pudding; Raisin Pie; Chocolate Pudding

I admit, this looks stupid/good.

p. 19: May 6-12: Creole Pie; Fluff Delicious; French Ice; Marble Cake; Cream Pudding; Apple Delight; Marshmallow Whip

p. 20: May 13-19: Banana Custard; Lemon Foam; Baked Apple with Banana Cream
Frozen Fruit; Caramel Dessert; Apple Roses; Cocoanut Bread-Crumb Pudding

Please, no… none for me, thanks!

p. 21: May 20-26: Royal Conserve; Hawaiian Pudding; Apple Pudding; Scotch Pudding; Sweet Potato Pudding; Peach Short Cake

p. 22: May 27-June 2: Orange Soft Custard; Delicious Peach Pie; Tapioca Fruit Pudding; Baked Bananas; Strawberry Dessert; Instant Fruit Pudding; Lady Fingers

Here she is again, throwing shade on everybody else's pie.

p. 23: June 4-9: Ancestors Pudding; Pomona Pudding; Cafe Jelly;  Cracker Sultana Pudding; Loganberry Puff; Lagony Pudding; Different Baked Apples

I have had this. I liked it enough that I was up all night.

How "different"? There's a custard sauce. Let your freak flag fly!

p. 24: June 10-16: Tapioca Pudding with Apricots; Plain Custard with Fig Meringue; Strawberry Mousse; Fairy Pudding; Hamburg Sponge; Spanish Cream; Marshaneil Pudding

p. 25: June 17-23: Angel Charlotte; Lemon Pie Supreme; Cold Pineapple Souffle; Rice Custard; Pineapple Shortcake; Escalloped Apples; Custard Pie

Against the "Delicious" pies, this lemon reigns Supreme, it seems. Pop would probably agree, since lemon meringue pie is his favorite.

p. 26: June 24-30: Spiced Cake; Apricot Pudding; Pineapple Tapioca Sponge; Strawberry Gelatine Mousse; Marshmallow Dessert; Banana Snow Whip; Cafe Mousse

A bold name for it, I dare say…

p. 28: July 1-7: Charlotte Russe; Chocolate Blanc-Mange; Prune Puff; Raspberry Ice; Strawberry Short Cake; Banana Fluff; Baked Peaches

p. 29: July 8-14: Cantaloupe Ice Cream; Currant Pie; Watermelon Pie; Fruited Mousse; Criss Cross Rhubarb Pie; Blueberry Crumb Pudding; Persimmon Pudding

p. 30: July 15- 21: Strawberry Muffins; Strawberry Cocktail; Caramel Pudding; Rice Cocoa Pudding; Strawberry Pudding; Lemon Pineapple Pie; Cold Cake

p. 31: July 22-28: Peach Pudding Steamed; Sponge Delight; Plain Loaf Cake; National Frappe; Tapioca Peaches; Gooseberry Pie; Casserole Quinces

p. 32: July 29-Aug. 4: Apricot Foam; Plum Pie; Steam Fruit Pudding; Strawberry Tapioca; New England Apples; Cheese Curd Cake; Bread Crumb Cocoa Pudding

Settle down, Wisconsin, it's curdled sour milk, not those squeaky chunks.

p. 33: Aug 5-11:Orange Juice Apples; Baked Rice with Marshmallows; Far East Pudding; Fruit Souffle' Pudding Regal; Date Fruit Slices; Orange Jelly with Apricots

There's still more to go, here
